Abstract
Teratoma is a type of tumor that develops from embryonic cells of the three germ layers: ectoderm,
mesoderm and endoderm. This diversity of origin allows teratomas to contain various types of tissues,
such as bone, skin with its annexes, and intestinal or urinary tissues, depending on the germ layer from
which they come. A clinical case is presented of a female patient who arrived at the hospital with an
acute abdomen, initially suspicious of acute appendicitis. However, during surgery, a tumor was
identified in the right ovary, which was suspected to be a teratoma. This case was treated in a second
level hospital in the city of Esmeraldas, Ecuador. For the report, an exhaustive review of the patient's
clinical record was carried out, which allowed a detailed description of her evolution and management.
Having as conclusions that ovarian teratomas are diverse tumors that require a deep understanding
of their clinical, diagnostic and treatment characteristics. The variety of tissues and symptoms that
these tumors can present complicates their management, making a multidisciplinary approach crucial
for adequate evaluation and treatment. Early detection and timely treatment are essential to improve
outcomes and reduce complications associated with these tumors.
